Emergency Supplies Kit

One of the most important steps you can take to prepare for disasters is to create an emergency supplies kit. An emergency supplies kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.Try to assemble your kit well in advance of an emergency. You may have to evacuate at a moment’s notice and will probably not have time to search for the supplies you need or have time to shop for them.

Include the following items in your emergency supplies kit:

  • Water (1 gallon per person per day for 3 days)
  • Food (at least a 3 day supply) that does not need electricity for storage or preparation
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Manual can opener (if kit contains canned food)
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Battery- powered NOAA weather radio and a commerical radio or hand crank radio
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
  • Prescription medications and eye wear
  • Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger
  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Paper cups, plates, plastic utensils, paper towels and moist towelettes
  • Complete change of clothing, including a long- sleeved shirt, pants, socks and sturdy shoes
  • Local maps

Consider the unique needs of your family when building your kit. If you have a baby, young children or pets you will need to add additional supplies. For a complete list of items to include in your emergency supplies kit visit: FEMA "Disaster Supplies Kit"
