Lincoln County taxpayers can receive up to $75.00 refund per household per year for hazardous waste disposal. Charges range from $.30 per pound for solvents to $2.00 per pound for pesticides. Businesses
Businesses classified as Very Small Quantity Generators (VSQG) can dispose of their hazardous waste simply by scheduling an appointment and dropping it off at a cost far less than contracting with commercial hazardous waste haulers. To meet the legal classification of Very Small Quantity Generators (VSQG), businesses must:
Generate 220 pounds or less of hazardous waste in a month.
Store no more than 2,200 pounds of hazardous waste on site at any given time.
Have no more than two pounds of acutely hazardous waste on site at any given time.
All VSQG participants are responsible for the proper packing and transportation of their waste materials.
Paint Disposal Directions
Household latex and non-lead oil based paints should be dried and land filled with regular garbage. Only lead based oil paint will be accepted at the hazardous waste collection facility along with stains, varnish, thinners, etc. . . All latex or oil based paints can be dried and land filled with regular garbage for a fraction of the cost.
To prepare household latex and non-leaded paint for landfill disposal, line a cardboard box with a plastic bag or use an old 5 gallon pail. Mix the old paint with an absorbent material like cat litter, sawdust or cold dry wood ashes. After the paint is dried or is no longer considered a liquid it is legal to landfill the entire container with contents.
The reasons why dried latex and non-lead oil based paint should be land filled verses taken to the hazardous waste facility is primarily due to cost. Disposal of one gallon of paint at the hazardous waste facility would cost Lincoln County over $3.00 per gallon verses less than 25 - 50 cents per gallon (depending on the type of absorbent material used) if land filled at the current landfill dumping charge.
Please note that only private individuals (not businesses or institutions) are allowed by the DNR to dry paint for landfill disposal. Businesses who have questions regarding hazardous waste should call their DNR Hazardous Waste Specialist at 715-365-8980.
